Christmas Trees

Choose a Quality Tree
At Naylor Roadside Market you will find a great selection of premium grade trees to choose from including:

  • Fraser Fir Live Christmas Trees are often the most popular choice. Frasers are known for their excellent needle retention, strong branches and fragrance.

After purchasing your tree, one of our team members will make a clean cut to the base of the tree, trim away stray branches, net and load the tree onto your vehicle at no charge.

What Else Do You Need?
If you do not own a fresh cut tree stand, now would be the time to purchase one. Choose a real Christmas tree stand that holds at least a gallon of water or more.

Also, purchasing a tree removal bag will help to protect your floors and make clean up easier at the end of the season.

Be sure to check out inside of our Roadside market for our vast selection of ornaments that help put the finishing touches on your tree!

Once You Arrive Home
Keep your Christmas tree in a sheltered, unheated area such as a porch or garage to protect it from the wind and sun until you are ready to bring it indoors and set it up. Be sure to keep the trunk of the tree immersed in a bucket of water so that sap from the tree does not form over the cut stump and block the trees ability to absorb water.

If it does, you may need to make a new cut prior to bringing the tree indoors.

Tree Set Up
Clear space in the room where you plan to display your Christmas tree. If you purchased a tree removal bag, this is the time to spread the bag on the ground to protect floors and carpets from possible moisture.

Then place your fresh cut tree stand on top of the bag. Bring the tree indoors and place it in the stand. Tighten the stands bolts and fill the base with water.

Watering Your Christmas Tree
In order to keep your Christmas tree fresh, it is very important to keep the tree stand filled with water.

A seal of dried sap will form over the cut stump in four to six hours if the water drops below the base of the tree, preventing the tree from absorbing water later when the tree stand is refilled.

If a seal does form, another fresh cut will need to be made or the tree will begin to wilt and drop its needles.

A tree will absorb as much as a gallon of water or more in the first 24 hours and one or more quarts a day thereafter. Water is important because it prevents the needles from drying and dropping off and the boughs from drooping. Water also keeps the tree fragrant.

Christmas Tree Safety

Christmas trees do not start fires, people do! Here are some helpful hints so that you and your family can enjoy the Christmas season and your Fraser fir tree to the fullest.

  • Check all electric lights and connections before decorating. Don’t use any lights with worn or frayed cords.

  • NEVER use lighted candles on your tree.

  • Don’t overload the electrical outlets.

  • Place your tree away from fireplaces, radiators, television sets, and other heat sources. These elements can prematurely dry out your tree.

  • Always make sure that your tree has plenty of water to prevent drying.

  • ALWAYS turn off all decorations before going to bed at night or anytime that you leave home.

TIPS FOR TAKING CARE OF YOUR GARLAND AND WREATHS

Soak Your Greenery for 24 Hours

The best way to fill your live wreath with fresh growing power is to soak it in water. Soak the needles, branches and stems so that the entire plant has an opportunity to absorb water. Without the main trunk, branches get their primary life from water, and drying out is where your wreath starts to die.

So before you add your ribbons and ornaments, soak the wreath or your fresh branches for several hours. The best timing is a full 24 hours of soaking to give your plants the best longevity after you hang the wreath.

Arrange Artful Decor After Soaking

Once your branches have soaked, pat them dry with a towel and begin decorating the wreath. From this point on, the wreath will only be misted to renew its water supply. Now is the ideal moment to make your wreath beautiful with your favorite decorations. Follow the theme of your holiday decor or create a beautiful season-neutral style that enriches your decorated space.

Soaked branches go well with thick ribbons and decorations laced into the branches. Consider a special display that can perch in the center of your wreath.

Mist Your Wreath or Garland Regularly

When your garland is hanging, one of the best ways to keep it fresh is to mist it lightly with water. Fill a spray bottle and adjust the spray to a fine mist. Then coat your evergreen wreath in fine misting droplets that can nourish the wreath and keep it from drying out. If you have treated your wreath with an anti-desiccant spray, you may have better results misting the stems directly to promote moisture absorption from your drying wreath.

Hang Wreaths in Cool Low-Light Areas

You can reduce the drying effect on your wreaths by placing them in cool and dim places.  Keep your wreath out of direct rays of sunlight or the sun will dry it out faster.  The same goes for wreaths above the fireplace soaking up hot, dry air and perhaps hanging on a hot chimney. Instead, keep your wreaths cool and out of direct drying light. Pick artful and sheltered places to hang your wreaths so that they can last the longest.
